What difference do all these capacity figures make?

There are three capacity figures about which you need to worry. There is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), the Payload capacity, and the Towing capacity that are listed in your vehicle door jamb and your owner’s manual. Getting these figures mixed up can cause incredible damage to your vehicle.

The GVWR is the total amount of weight your vehicle can carry. The GVWR includes the weight of your vehicle, you, your passengers, and your payload along with the tongue weight of the trailer. The payload capacity is inside the GVWR. It includes you, your passengers, your cargo and the tongue weight of your trailer. The towing capacity is the amount of weight your vehicle can pull.
